First transcontinental automobile race photographs collection [graphic], 1903-1946.

Photographs and articles documenting the first transcontinental automobile race that ran from New York City to the National Good Roads Convention at the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Or. in May-June 1905. The photographs depict the two 1903 Curved Dash Oldsmobile cars in the race -- "Old Scout," driven by Dwight B. Huss and his passenger Milford Wigle, and "Old Steady," driven by Percy F. Megargel and his passenger, Barton Stanchfield -- their passage across the United States, and "Old Scout" and the winning team arriving in Portland. There are also photos of Huss retracing the route of the race in "Old Scout" for a 1931 Good Roads tour; "Old Scout" in 1946; and L. L. Whitman and E. I. Hammond's San Francisco-to-New York cross-country automobile expedition in July-September 1903.
